Tourism and cultural monuments – Development of tourist attractions

Glasgow Caledonian University (CGU), The Moffat Centre and The Thor Heyerdahl Institute have been working together since 2004 in order to analyse and make proposals for cultural monuments to be developed as tourist attractions in Buskerud, Telemark and Vestfold.

The main objectives of the partnership have been to build and promote international alliances in the Buskerud, Vestfold and Telemark region, to develop international co-operation within education and to forge links between industry and research.

The tradition that exists in Great Britain of partnerships between public and private bodies, including R&D, represents an alternative way of developing and marketing cultural monuments and tourism. The national policies for cultural monuments and tourism in Norway have been and still are in a process of change. In this context the contribution from international development co-operation has been met with interest and positive feedback.
