The Institute endeavours to promote and continue to develop Thor Heyerdahl’s ideas and principles within, interdisciplinary research, international dialogue / multi-cultural co-operation and protection of the global environment
Heritage of the world and Unesco
In May 2011, the Thor Heyerdahl Archives were added to UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” Register. Currently, this list includes 238 collections from all over the world.
Every year since 2006 the Thor Heyerdahl Institute has organised a conference on an important contemporary global issue. You can find information about all the International Heyerdahl Day conferences that have been organised so far here.

April 10th we witnessed a fantastic concert held by the winners of the 2018 T.O.S.C.A opera competition. In cooperation with the Italian Institute of Culture in Oslo The Thor Heyerdahl Institute organised the successful event joining important friendships and beautiful music.
